How to Download YouTube Audio as WAV (Free, No Software Needed)

October 7, 2026 · 5 min read

WAV is the format producers reach for when a sound is going into a DAW: every sampler opens it, nothing has to be decoded on playback, and chopping or time-stretching it adds no new compression artifacts. BeatDL turns any YouTube video into a WAV file for free, right in your browser - and tells you the beat's BPM and key while it does.

Paste a YouTube link, pick WAV, and download - no account, no software.

Step-by-Step: Download YouTube as WAV

  1. Open beatdl.net and paste the YouTube link into the input.
  2. Click WAV - it sits right next to MP3, no extra menu.
  3. Tick the disclaimer and press Go.
  4. The BPM and key appear as soon as the analysis finishes; the WAV file is ready a moment later.
  5. Press Download. On an iPhone this opens the share sheet - choose Save to Files.

The file name already carries the tempo and key, for example Night Drive 140bpm F# minor.wav, so it sorts itself in your sample folder.

What Kind of WAV Do You Get?

BeatDL writes standard 16-bit PCM WAV, stereo, at your browser's audio sample rate - usually 44.1 or 48 kHz. That is the format every DAW, sampler and hardware unit accepts: FL Studio, Ableton, Logic, Pro Tools, Reaper, an MPC or an SP-404. Expect roughly 10-11 MB per minute of audio.

Does WAV Sound Better Than MP3 Here?

Not by itself - and it is worth being straight about why. YouTube stores audio in a lossy format (Opus or AAC) before anyone downloads it. Converting that to WAV keeps every bit of what YouTube has, but it cannot restore what YouTube's own encoder already removed.

Where WAV does win is everything that happens next:

Rule of thumb: WAV for anything you will chop, flip, loop or record over; MP3 (320 kbps) for listening and sharing, where a 3x smaller file matters more.

WAV vs MP3 vs FLAC

FormatSize per minuteBest for
WAV~10-11 MBDAWs, samplers, hardware - opens everywhere
FLAC~5-6 MBSame audio as WAV, compressed - saves disk space
MP3 320~2.4 MBListening, sending, phones

FLAC is in the More menu on BeatDL if you want WAV-identical audio at about half the size - see the FLAC guide.

Recording Vocals Over It? Check the Tuning First

Many beats are tuned slightly off the standard A = 440 Hz. If yours is, a pitch corrector set to 440 will pull the vocal a few cents away from the beat. BeatDL shows the offset next to the key, and the 🎚️ Auto-Tune settings button gives you the exact Detune value for Auto-Tune, Pitcher, Melodyne and others. More in Auto-Tune settings for a detuned beat.

Grab the WAV - BPM, key and tuning included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download YouTube audio as WAV for free?

Yes. BeatDL converts any public YouTube video to WAV for free in your browser - no account, no software, no watermark.

Is a WAV from YouTube lossless?

The WAV itself is lossless, but YouTube's audio was already compressed before you downloaded it. WAV keeps everything YouTube has without adding another round of compression - which is what matters for chopping, looping and mixing.

What sample rate and bit depth is the WAV?

16-bit PCM stereo at your browser's audio sample rate, usually 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz - the standard format every DAW and sampler opens.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. When you press Download, the iPhone share sheet opens - choose Save to Files and the WAV lands in the Files app.

Which beats can I download?

Only beats that are free to use or that you have the rights to. Many producers upload free-for-non-profit beats; always check the description and the producer's terms.
